Common questions and tips from our work with Phoenix customers.
- Why does my disposal hum but not spin?
- A hum with no rotation means the motor is getting power but the grinding plate is jammed, usually by a bone, fruit pit, or utensil. Leaving it humming will burn out the motor, so switch it off. We clear the obstruction, check the plate and shredder ring for damage, and confirm the motor still turns freely before calling the repair done.
- Why is my garbage disposal leaking under the sink?
- Leak location tells the story. Water at the top usually means a failed sink flange or dried-out plumber's putty. A leak at the side is typically the dishwasher inlet or the drain elbow gasket. Water dripping from the bottom housing generally means an internal seal has failed, and at that point replacement usually beats repair. We identify the source before recommending either.
- What should never go down a disposal?
- Grease and cooking oil, fibrous vegetables like celery and artichoke, potato peels in quantity, coffee grounds, pasta and rice, bones, and fruit pits. Grease is the worst offender in Phoenix kitchens because it cools and coats the drain line downstream. Run cold water before, during, and for about twenty seconds after grinding to carry waste all the way through.
Tip
Try the reset button before you call
If the disposal is completely silent, look for the small red reset button on the bottom of the unit and press it, then check the breaker panel. Thermal overload from a jam trips that button regularly, and pressing it solves the problem for free. If it trips again right away or the unit still does nothing, stop and call (602) 880-6830.
